I was only twelve years old when I started working for my uncles’ produce shop. While most of my
friends were still asleep, my Saturdays began early in the morning where I would sweep floors, unload
trucks and whatever other jobs I could find to contribute to the company and staff. Throughout high
school, I worked weekends, holidays, and even summer vacations to help my single mother support me
and my two brothers. Though I didn’t realize it at the time, I was building a foundation to understanding
how the produce business works from the ground up.
In November of 1986, I opened my very own produce company: Quality Fruit & Vegetable Company.
I was very fortunate that a number of clients followed me, allowing my new enterprise to flourish from
the onset. Over the next decade, we established ourselves as one of the premier wholesalers in the
region, and are currently enjoying our third facility. From our first modest warehouse of 15,000 square
feet, we moved to a 25,000-square-foot unit, and then to our current home of 68,000 square feet.
Thanks to the support of my wife, who also works with me, as well as my two brothers who joined us
in the mid 1990s, we have grown to become one of the elite suppliers in our Southwest area. Today,
we continue to enjoy remarkable support from our hometown in El Paso, excellent business in the
whole state of New Mexico, and as far east as the Midland/Odessa area as well. Furthermore, our
presence in Mexican trade also continues to grow.
We are now a comprehensive supplier that boasts five full-size ripening rooms for bananas, and two
separate ripening rooms for avocados, papayas, mangos, tomatoes, and whatever else our needs may
be. Our facility is equipped with four large refrigerated rooms, a separate salad room, a picking room,
and a refrigerated area for receiving to assist with unloading refrigerated trucks while maintaining a
cold chain from the truck to the refrigerated dock. We currently have refrigeration for about 30 trailer
loads of merchandise with enough room for future expansion.
