In 1972, founder Ray Meyer identified a niche that just
wasn’t available for security contractors. A contractor
could find the control he needed but had to go
elsewhere to get the other products that completed
the system. There just wasn’t any one-stop place to
purchase an entire system—not to mention, there were
numerous manufacturers who provided just portions of
an entire system. Alarm Products Distributors was born.
Ray needed a central location to make it as convenient
as possible for regional contractors—Minneapolis was
chosen for the location.
APD was purchased in 1986 by Clint Dobratz, and we
moved to the Midway District within the Twin Cities
in 1992. The central location of our current facility
has since undergone three expansions to ensure the
continued growth and success we have experienced as
a premier leader in the low-voltage distributor industry.
With our acquisition of Birmingham Alarm Supply
Company (BASCO) in 2012, APD continues to grow and
strengthen our position within the industry as well as
broaden the scope of our customer base.
