It all started 70 years ago with a young man, Harold
Eggleston, struggling to make ends meet during the
great depression. Harold befriended a gentleman
who happened to own the Acme Neon Accessory
Company of Detroit. They needed someone to run a
new branch in Grand Rapids; Harold convinced
them he was their man.
Harold built the Grand Rapids branch on the
same extraordinary service we take pride in today,
and by the time WWII ended, he had scraped
together enough capital to purchase the branch
from Acme and changed the name to Wholesale
Electric and Neon Supply Company (WENSCO).
In 1955, Harold Jr., who had been actively helping
his parents in the business, came up with the idea of
delivering sign supplies out of a big van truck. He
called it a “warehouse on wheels.” By 1973, Wensco
had three trucks on the road serving a broad range of
customers. When it became apparent that this type
of operation could not keep up with demand, the
family decided to create more warehouse facilities to
serve its expanding list of customers.
Today, Harold Jr. is chairman emeritus of Wensco,
while his daughter, Judy Nelson is President and
CEO. Judy has the same determination as did her
grandfather who founded the business. Along with
her family of employees, she is committed to serving
customers with grace and dedication.
